Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Banana Cookies


Throughout the fall and winter I love to bake!  Traditionally, I would whip together baked goods and not think twice about the ingredients in the recipe.  I figured if it was homemade, it was fine to eat in moderation.  This year is different, however.

Because “four of the top ten killers in America are chronic diseases that can be linked to diet” {says Michael Pollan and other experts}, I am making a concerted effort to drastically reduce my consumption of processed foods.  This year I am baking with minimally refined ingredients {such as honey, oats, maple syrup, dates, peanut butter, and nuts}.  Ultimately, I am avoiding processed foods.  Cane sugar and flour, two staples in baking, are heavily processed.

This delicious recipe, which comes from  Weelicious, is a wonderful example of creative baking using primarily unrefined ingredients!


Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Banana Cookies


  • 3 bananas {preferably ripe or spotty bananas}
  • 2 cups old fashioned oats
  • 1 cup pitted and chopped dried dates
  • 1/4 cup oil {I used coconut oil}
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips, walnuts or raisins
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt


  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Mash bananas in a bowl, and mix in the remaining ingredients.
  3. Allow the mixture to sit for 10 minutes.
  4. Using a mini ice cream scoop or tablespoon, place the batter onto a Silpat or parchment-lined baking sheet.
  5. Bake for 25 Minutes.
  6. Cool and serve.
